Application of the Job Characteristics Model to Strategic Air Command Missile Launch and Missile Operations Officers

This study investigates the job attitudes of Strategic Air Command Missile Launch Officers and Missile Operations Officers. The overall objective of the research was to determine whether a job redesign program holds any potential for improving the quality of work and the work motivation of Missile Launch and Missile Operations Officers. The methodology consisted of measuring levels of worker satisfaction with several dimensions of the work and work environment. Hackman and Oldham's Job Diagnostic Survey was the instrument used to collect sample data. Missile Launch Officer and Missile Operations Officer data were compared to sample populations of non-managerial and staff personnel respectively. Results of hypothesis testing among Missile Launch Officer's and a Non-Managerial National Norm showed nine of sixteen characteristics to be below the national norm. The nine characteristics are: general satisfaction, growth satisfaction, motivating potential score, task identity, autonomy, feedback from the job, social satisfaction, security satisfaction, and supervisory satisfaction.
