Principles and Procedures for the Evaluation of Chemical and Biochemical Sensors during Exploratory Development

Many chemical and biochemical sensors transduce a chemical or physical surface phenomenon, such as an oxidation/reduction process, an immunological binding event, or a physical absorption, into an electrical signal. This report describes principles and procedures to characterize such sensors and includes information pertinent to electrochemical, optical, and piezoelectric sensors. Concepts dealing directly with the transduction mechanisms and sensor operation are discussed. Peripheral concerns such as designing a sensor system to be adaptable to new applications are also discussed.
