This Lecture Series will describe interactions between transient electromagnetic waves with aircraft and missile avionics systems. Transient electromagnetic waves include electromagnetic pulses (EMP) from nuclear explosions, lightning, and static electricity. Interactions are introduced by coupling of EMP and lightning induced currents and voltages with avionics components. Shielding against these interactions is discussed with respect to induced currents and voltages from EMP and lightning, and induced voltages from static charging effects. Several examples of interactions, coupling, shielding, and measurement techniques are presented. This Lecture Series, sponsored by the Avionics Panel of AGARD, has been implemented by the Consultant and Exchange Programme of AGARD. (Author)
