Compatibility of Wheel-Bearing Seal Elastomers with MIL-G-10924 Greases

Swelling or shrinkage and changes in physical properties of several commercial seal elastomers were determined subsequent to their exposure in existing and improved MIL-G-10924 multipurpose greases. Preliminary results indicate that seal/grease compatibility cannot be assumed merely on the basis of favorable minimal swelling or shrinkage. Sealing capability is also contingent upon minimization of changes in other physical characteristics of the seal achieved through seal elastomer compound optimization.
