Develop a Biomedical Database on the Medical Aspects of Chemical Defense

We developed an automated information system known as CARS (Chemical Agent Retrieval System) for the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense. Now completed, CARS consists of a machine-readable database synopsizing, 574 documents on agents GA, GB (Sarin); GD (soman), GE, GF, GH and VX. A microfiche library of copies of all source documents was also created. CARS also contains a non-machine-readable database synopsizing 949 classified documents on the same agents. CARS employs a 124-field, variable length/variable field format that includes up to 800 words in a free-language abstract field. Extensive machine indexing of fields and a controlled vocabulary index are included. System documentation consisting of a complete Reference Manual and training Workshop Guide was developed.
