摘要

Point-by-point X-ray absorption mapping is a simple and non-destructive technique for mapping the distribution of mobile ions in the beta aluminas and related materials. It can be used to study the diffusion of many different ions into and out of solid electrolytes and is a powerful technique for studying the kinetics and thermodynamics of ion exchange reactions. The results demonstrate the unreliability of weight change measurements as an indicator of the extent of ion exchange in the beta aluminas, particularly when multivalent transition metals or lanthanide ions are involved.
