During this program, comparative enzyme reactivity studies were made (against inhibitors and substrates) with eleven active-serine enzymes, under native and denaturing conditions. The active-serine enzymes have differing reactivities toward various organophosphate-type inhibitors. These reactivities are influenced by changing reaction conditions. It was found that under assay conditions resembling those of the potential decontamination system, carboxylesterase was very reactive with DFP. The reaction of this enzyme with Soman under the same conditions was also measured. It appears quite feasible to utilize the reactivities of enzymes or enzyme-fragments to accelerate the rate of pick-up of agents such as intact or wounded skin.
