Unsuccessful Use of Praziquantel to Treat Acute Facioliasis in Children

Parziquantel is effective against several trematode and cestode infectious. We have successfully used it to treat schistosomiasis (1, 2) and hymenolepiasis (3). Other investigators have reported good results in treating clonorchiasis (4), paragonimiasis (5), and cysticercosis (6). Clinical trials of the use of praziquantel to treat acute facioliasis are limited (7, 8). We report here the use of praziquantel to treat acute fascioliasis in five of seven infected children. Acute fascioliasis in children can be a serious infection. Praziquantel in the dose we used, at least during the acute phase of the infection, does not appear to be effective. Bithionol remains the most practical and effective drug available to treating acute fascioliasis.
