This is the first of a series of three papers on the bulk physical properties of styrene-alkoxide ionomers. In this first paper, the synthesis and mechanical properties of the sodium salts of polystyrene-co-4-hydroxystyrene will be discussed. As some charge delocalization would be expected in this system, a second system, the sodium salts of polystyrene-co-4-hydroxymetylstyrene, was studied and is the subject of part II of this series. In the latter ionomer, no charge delocalization would be expected, and the ionic group is separated from the benzene ring by a flexible methylene group. The third and final paper of this series will compare the torsion pendulum results of the above styrene-alkoxide ionomers with those of polystyrene-co-sodium-4-sulfonate, polystyrene-co-sodium, styrene-4-carboxylate, polystyrene-co-sodium methacrylate and polystyrene-co-4-vinyl-N-methylpyridinium iodide.
