Radiation Efficiency of Planar Gaussian Schell-Model Sources

A general expression is derived for the ratio of the radiated power and the source integrated intensity for any planar gaussian Schell model source. The behavior of this quantity, known as the radiation efficiency of the source, is displayed graphically as a function of the rms width of the intensity profile and the spatial coherence length of the light distribution across the source. Some limiting cases are discussed and it is shown that a gaussian correlated quasihomogeneous source may have higher radiation efficiency than a fully coherent Schell model source with a gaussian intensity profile (e.g., a single mode laser).
