The goal of this work was to build light valves based on suitable zero order diffraction gratings. The piezoelectric plastic PVF2 (polyvinylidine fluoride) was chosen as the substrate, because the piezoelectricity could be used to produce the motion. Techniques were successfully developed to emboss the gratings in the plastic and to perform lithography for defining electrodes. The optical properties of the facing gratings were measured and modelled. Finally light valves were constructed using a chevron type motion amplifying scheme. This construction utilized moire fringes to align the grating and microgluing and microcrymping techniques. Although we fulfilled our goal of building a structure which proved the principle of operation to be sound, the practical difficulty of assembling a single light valve left the participants pessimistic about constructing an entire array. An added task on focused ion beam assisted deposition applied to circuit restructuring was proposed. Since the focused ion beam can have a spot diameter on the sample of submicron dimensions and it can be scanned, a submicron additive, maskless, resistless patterning technique results.
