Effects of Heat Treatments on the Magnetic and Optical Properties of Fe Ions Implanted in SiO2 Glass

Amorphous magnetic materials have been produced by implanting silica glass platelets with Fe ions. Electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectra of the ions have been measured at 9 GHz and temperatures of 6 to 400 K. These measurements have shown that at doses > or = 10 to the 16th power/sq cm, a long range order of the magnetic moments of the implanted ions is present. Based on the temperature dependence of the EMR spectra, a speromagnetic order is tentatively attributed to the implanted ions and to thermally treated samples when the treatment temperature and times are within certain ranges. Optical absorbance from 3 to 6.3 eV shows effects of implantation and subsequent thermal treatments.
