The 23Na quadrupole coupling constants (QCC) were calculated for a quasi-crystalline model of the neat phase of anhydrous amphiphiles. The magnitude of the QCC in short chain sodium alkanoates and its dependence on the lateral packaging area of the polar heads was accurately predicted by assuming the charges to lie in a double-layered square array of interdigitated ion pairs.
