Multiple Representation Document Development

The world of electronic publishing software seems to divide into two camps: the conventional batch-oriented programming language approach versus the more elaborate direct manipulation paradigm. This paper indicates which aspects of document preparation are more conveniently handled under which model and point out several instances of a hybrid approach which takes advantage of multiple representations. The authors introduce a framework for analyzing the structure of multiple representation systems in general. Based upon this simple but robust framework, a top-down design methodology is derived. The design of a fairly sophisticated document development environment is discussed as a case study of the methodology. Keywords: Text editing, Graphics programming, UNIX operating system. (KR)
