Development of a Single Tank Tactical Exercise for Training M1 Tank Commanders

An analysis was conducted of the basic NCO course for training M1 tank commanders (19k BNCOC) in terms of the crawl-walk-run approach to training. The results of the analysis showed only partial correspondence between tasks in the classroom and those trained in the field. To increase the correspondence between tasks included in different phases of training, two versions of a new tactical exercise were developed. In contrast to previous field exercises, which were conducted in a platoon context, the new military exercise was designed for implementation by a single tank. A field version of the exercise was designed to make student performance more observable by instructors. A second version of the exercise was designed for implementation on a battlefield simulation in order to facilitate the transition from classroom to field training.
