Summary of Automated Construction Management System (ACMS) Research in the 18th Engineer Brigade

In 1983, the Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (USA-CERL) developed a microcomputer-based troop construction management system for the 18th Engineer Brigade. The initial system capability consisted of a Network Analysis Module and a System Utilities Module with word processing and electronic spreadsheet. In April 1983, the Data Base Management Module was added. The system was named the Automated Construction Management System (ACMS) and was first used during the 1983 construction season. The Data Base Management Module was evaluated and enhanced for the 1984 construction season. This report summarizes USA-CERL's research into automated troop construction management using the ACMS as developed for the 18th Engineer Brigade. It describes how the system was used within the organization and gives the users' opinions of the system. Also documented are lessons learned by applying microcomputer-based construction management software to a large troop construction project in a combat-heavy engineer brigade. Enhancements to the system are recommended for future work.
