Heterophyid Metacercariae in the Fish Tilapia sp. (Cichlidae) from Edku, Maryut and Manzala Lakes in Egypt

Pygidiopsis genata and Haplorchis pumilio were recovered from Tilapia nilotica, Tilapia zilli Tilapia simonis and Tilapia galilae from Idku, Maryut and Manzala Lakes. Monthly collections of Tilapia were net caught from the first two lakes during the period from November 1976 to October 1977 and only one collection was made in August 1976 from Manzala Lake. The prevalence of P. genata was highest in T. zilli (63.8%) from Maryut Lake, in T. nilotica (37.9%) from Idku and Manzala Lakes as compared to other Tilapia species in the three lakes. The prevalence of P. genata in Tilapia was lowest during the colder months and reached a peak during the warmest months of the summer. The prevalence of H. pumilio metacercaria was generally lower than that of P. genata and was more prevalent in T. simonis than in any other Tilapia species from the first two lakes. Identification of metacercariae was confirmed by recovering the adult worms after feeding the metacercariae to laboratory animals including hamsters, mice, rats, cats and puppies.
