Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry: A Status Report

The status of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is evaluated and reviewed. It is shown that ICP/MS is capable of part-per-trillion detection limits, broad linear dynamic range, and of analyses that are relatively free from interferences caused by sample type. However, ICP/MS is still plagued with a number of difficulties, including rare but occasionally devastating isobaric interferences, restriction to sample solutions that are relatively low in total concentration, and the existence of poorly understood matrix interference effects.
