Additive Solutions for Better Blood Preservation

This review will focus on recent developments in blood preservation technology which can be categorized by the generic term additive solution . The discussion will be limited to the preservation of packed red blood cells. To date, additive solutions have not been used to preserve other cell lines or plasma proteins. An additive solution may be defined as a solution packaged in a blood bag set which: (1) is contained separately in a satellite bag, but is attached by tubing to the primary CPD-containing bag; (2) is an isotonic solution containing some or all of the nutrients needed for extended red cell storage.
