An automated system utilizing two Varian gas chromatographs, a Varian 401 Chromatography Data System, and an Apple II computer has been developed to perform repetitive analysis for Chemical Warfare agent vapours or other target vapours either penetrating through or desorbing from materials. Single, or simultaneous dual detector analysis of target vapours in effluent gas streams from one or two vapour sources can be performed by use of a heated multiport gas sampling valve. Software for the storage of vapour analysis results on the stand alone microcomputer has been developed. As well, programs for post run selection and storage of quantitative results of specific components based on retention time, output of tabular summaries of the selected component concentration with elapsed time and graphical display and hardcopy of the concentration-elapsed time profiles are described. Subsequent analysis of liquid extracts of the material for residual agent is accomplished on the second dual detector gas chromatograph equipped with autosampler. The design of a desorption cell for use with the system is also given and an example of the utility of the system employing Malathion is described.
