Identification of chemical agents has been facilitated by high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography combined with mass spectroscopy. These methods are limited by instrumentation which is too large, complicated, and slow. The use of biosensors for detection purposes offers the promise of a more compact and efficient biosensors for detection purposes offers the promise of a more compact and efficient method. A lipid bilayer in which receptive material was placed was developed in the study for use with a patch clamp paradigm. The bilayers which produced the best results were composed of combinations of lecithin and spingomyelin or the synthetic diphytanoyl-lecithin. This patch microprobe system is suitable for research and development in biosensor technology. (Author)
