Synthesis of Triisocyanate Curatives

The objective of this task is the improvement of solid propellant systems through the synthesis of new polymeric propellant ingredients. This task is divided into three sub-tasks: Isocyanate Crosslinking Agents, Novel Energetic Binders, and Energetic Internal Plasticizers. To date our efforts have focused exclusively on the first sub-task. A new triisocyanate curative triisocyanatomethylethane, TIME, was prepared from trimethylolethane via a four step synthesis. The triol precursor to octyltriprimaryisocyanate, OCTYPI, was prepared. Various selective reduction methods for preparation of energetic triisocyanates were surveyed. Two new synthetic methods were developed; one involves a one-pot synthesis of isocyanates from carboxylic acids using diphenylphosphoryl azide, DPPA, and Proton Sponge. The other method involves a one-pot preparation of amines from alcohols using DPPA and propane-1,3- dithiol.
