Report of 1986 and 1987 Class II Surveys and Testing of Cultural Resources at Conchas Lake, New Mexico

Surface assemblage documentation and subsurface testing was conducted at three prehistoric sites (LA 29432, La 29433 and LA 56120) to evaluate their potential for meeting the eligibility requirements for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. All are located near the dam axis and are primarily large open sites; four small rockshelters are present at LA 29432. These sites have from 81-91% lithic debitage, 6 to 11% cores and 2 to 7% chipped stone tools; no diagnostic artifacts were found. Test excavations at LA 29432 and LA 29433 demonstrated little subsurface potential and a limited variety of artifacts. In contrast, a wider range of activities is indicated by the presence of ground and battered stone at LA 56120. The presence of high quantities of subsurface materials in the upper 30-40 cm indicated good potential for obtaining prehistoric contextual material at this latter site.
