摘要

Halogenated sulfide derivatives are powerful alkylating agents that can cause severe damage to skin and respiratory tract mucosa. Their destruction may be accomplished by oxidative reactions under drastic reaction conditions. Transformation of sulfides to nontoxic sulfoxides or the correspondingly less toxic sulfones can be achieved by interaction with peroxides at strong acidic pH with the temperature controlled below -70C. These reaction conditions are too drastic for skin decontamination of sulfide blistering agents. However, our recent in-house efforts have demonstrated that hydrogen peroxide is an effective oxidative reagent that can rapidly and quantitatively transform sulfide derivatives to the corresponding sulfoxides with sulfones generated as minute by-products.
