Elastomeric Binders and Bonding Agents for Desensitization of Explosives

The objective of this report is a critical review of polyurethane binders for Low Vulnerability Ammunition (LOVA) explosives for large caliber weapons. A major objective is the evaluation of important trends in materials, catalysts, stabilizers, oxidizers, bonding agents, and processes to provide more effective, safer explosives. An additional objective is to recommend directions for future work to effect further improvement in polyurethane binder systems. The function of the binder is to lower the chance of accidental ignition of the binder/explosive system during manufacture, transport, or storage, without sacrificing the level of performance. (jes)
