Potential Effects of Relocation Decisions on Retention of Air Force Dual-Officer Couples

This study investigated the predicted career decisions of Air Force dual-officer couples when faced with family separation. The number of officer couples has risen dramatically in recent years and is expected to continue to rise. As such, the Air Force must be concerned with the effect of joint-spouse policies on the retention of these couples. Career decisions were explored in terms of the following variables: sex and parental status of the respondent, length of family separation, and desirability of Air Force job offers. Based on the results, it was recommended that the Air Force continue its current emphasis on family issues (including those pertaining to military couples). It was also recommended that family separation be minimized and job desirability maximized when couples must be separated.
