Molecular Mixing and Chemical Reactions in Turbulent Shear Layers.

A model is proposed for describing chemical reactions in a turbulent shear layer. The model exhibits explicitly the effects on the overall reaction rate of equivalence ratio and of the Schmidt, Reynolds and Damkohler numbers. The model predictions compare favorably with experimental results in which all of these parameters are varied. The comparisons imply that the Reynolds number influences the effective reaction rate for Re as high as 6th to the 10th power and that the reaction rate becomes mixing limited for values of the Damkohler number, based on time of flight to the measuring station and the overall reaction time, of about 40.
