Removing Cultural Barriers to Care during Childbearing: A Continuing Education Module

As experienced registered nurses in the obstetrical area within the United States Air Force, we felt a need to focus on specific cultural groups and their unique needs during childbearing. We identified the two largest groups serviced by the USAF (excluding caucasian Americans). We utilized a telephone questionnaire completed by Obstetrical and Gynecological Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Charge Nurses of the Ob/Gyn clinics currently on active duty with the USAF to help us identify these groups: Asians (specifically Philippino and Korean), and Hispanic (specifically Mexican-American). Through literature review we compiled the most up-to-date information available to provide guidelines for care providers and clinical nurses in caring for these unique groups.
