Quantitative Investigation of the Seasonal Occurrence of 'Culex tritaeniorhynchus' in Okinawa

A quantitative investigation of a seasonal mosquito population using weather data and a Poisson regression model is presented. The model was developed using Culex tritaeniorhynchus collections around Kadena, Okinawa between 1965 and 1974. The mean monthly temperature, the mean monthly temperature deviation from the long-termed mean temperature and the precipitation two months preceding were the weather variables providing the best account of the seasonal distribution. It was also determined that there were spatial and temporal variations not accounted for by the weather data. Using information derived from the Kadena model, a formula was developed and successfully tested on mosquito collection data from Naha, a city 15 km south of Kadena. Keywords: Reprints. (KT)
