摘要

There has been a marked increase in the demand and use of austenitic stainless steels as structural material, containing suitable levels of nitrogen in order to enhance strength characteristics. There is an obvious economic advantage in using nitrogen in stainless steels, for nitrogen can replace or supplement the element nickel. Nitrogen which is an austenite stabilizer like nickel, has the benefit of being much less expensive and having thirty times the austenite forming potential of nickel. Nitrogen has also been found to suppress the formation of secondary phases which are detrimental to corrosion resistance. (JES)
