Choosing a PC-Based Finite Element Code for Packaging Design Applications

This technical note documents the evaluation of four PC-based finite element programs (SUPERSAP, NISA II-PC, COSMOS/M, and PAL2) for use in packaging engineering. There is a growing need for design analyses before committing to prototype fabrication of containers and cushioning. Similar analyses are crucial during the development of munitions and equipment; analysis can uncover design flaws overlooked by the developer. A PC-based finite element program which can be used on the Zenith Z-248 and Computervision Personal Designer workstations in conjunction with the resident CADD software would provide design engineers a powerful combination of design and analysis tools. Requirements for the program are defined in terms of performance capabilities, hardware and software interfaces, and usability. Though the requirements were tailored toward packaging engineering, they are generally suitable for other engineering applications. Each program was numerically rated against criteria derived from the above general requirements to obtain an overall rating. The results and conclusions address the ratings and preference ranking of the programs for packaging design applications.
