Nontoxigenic 01 'Vibrio cholerae' in Peru: A Report of Two Cases Associated with Diarrhea

Noncholera toxin producing 01 Vibrio cholerae have been isolated from environmental sources in various parts of the world. Nonenterotoxin producing 01 V. cholerae biotype E1 Tor, serotype Ogawa strains were isolated from sewage in Brazil in 1978. However, these strains were nonpathogenic to human subjects and were never isolated from diarrheal specimens (Levine et al., 1982). Non-01 V. cholerae are frequently isolated from diarrheal specimens in certain geographic areas (Hughes et al., 1978; McIntyre et al., 1965). Non-01 V. cholerae strains were first reported isolated from diarrheal cases in Peru by Kay et al. (1984). These authors stated that 01 V. cholerae may soon appear in South America. Here, we report the isolation of 01 V. cholerae from two patients with diarrhea in Peru. These two cases were found during ongoing diarrheal surveillance studies and are the first reports of 01 V. cholerae from clinical specimens in South America. keywords: Reprints. (kt)
