Integrated Approach Fault Tolerance-Current State and Future Requirements.

Fault tolerance is a very broad topic. There are many valuable results in the area with many important areas of research remaining. This workshop brought together researchers in four areas - applications, operating systems, hardware, and modelling - in an attempt to take an integrated view of fault tolerance. This report presents the outcome of the discussion of the different groups, and a description of the presentations made at the start of the workshop. The use of computers in critical applications such as aircraft flight control and industrial processes continues to increase. As it does so, there is a corresponding increase in the need for computing systems that will continue to operate despite failures. Perhaps the best approach for achieving such dependable computing is the use of integrated fault tolerance, where the system is designed from the ground up to support dependable computing for the given application. With a clean slate, the system designer can allocate portions of the functionality required to implement dependability to the different levels of the system rather than being forced a priori to use a given architecture or operating system. It is with this view that a workshop was organized to discuss the issues involved in an integrated approach to fault tolerance. (kr)
