Analysis of Air Photo and Radar Imagery of Barro Colorado Island, Panama.

Imagery of terrain is covered with a closed canopy of tall trees does not show the ground surface, and any information about surface characteristics, such as rock and soil types, structure, drainageways, etc., must come from an examination of the tree canopy surface. An evaluation of stereo aerial photography showed that inferences could be made about general terrain characteristics such as landform, probable structure and rock types, and major drainageways, but it requires experienced and skilled analysts, and stereo imagery. Surface roughness, obstacles, and minor drainageways could not be determined. Lack of vegetation penetration by radar severely limits the quantity and quality of information that can be derived.
