摘要

Ambient-temperature molten salts consisting of AlCl3 and an organic chloride are of considerable interest as solvents for a variety of electrochemical and spectroscopic studies. One such solvent, aluminum chloride-1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride (AlCl3-ImCl), is a liquid at room temperature over the composition range 33-67 mol% AlCl3. The solvent shows Lewis acidity and basicity depending upon the AlCl3:ImCl mole ratio. If the ratio is greater than, equal to or less than 1, the solvent is acidic, neutral, or basic, respectively. Electrochemical and spectroscopic studies of organic and inorganic solutes have been carried out in these solvents. Here we describe spectrochemical and electrochemical studies on the ferricyanide/ferrocyanide couple in the AlCl3-ImCl molten salt solvent. Reprints. (kt)
