Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) manufacturers have traditionally not utilized their instruments as effectively as possible for spectral archiving and output. Long-term storage of data files on hard fixed disk media is impractical because of the need to keep disk space available for data acquisition and manipulation. Plotting is also restricted as much by the built in plotters themselves as by the software written for them. Hard copy output is almost always limited in terms of overall size, letter fonts, line thicknesses, integration formats, peak picking, and formats for adding spectral parameters, axes, and titles. Herein, we describe a scheme for transferring spectral data files from a Bruker MSL-200 spectrometer to a microcomputer for data archiving. In addition through the use of a commercially available off-line data processing package which we have modified for NMR applications, we can completely process NMR data files (zero-fill, Fourier transform, phase correct, set proper spectral axis, and peak pick) for spectral analysis and for use in text documents such as reports, papers, and books.
