Role of Health Services in Support of the Theater Campaign Plan

The contribution of health services, a major component of logistical support, is often little understood and overlooked in the planning and execution of theater campaign strategy. Medical support is considered, but only as it applies to support of deployed forces. This study examines the importance of health services in the formulation of strategic objectives. Proper application of selected logistical areas can prevent escalation of conflict from nonviolent to violent military means. If this is not accomplished, further planning considerations are addressed. The lack of historical and current doctrinal guidance on the connection between the integration of campaign planning and medical support considerations is shown. A review of medical considerations in the European Theater is followed by the status in resolving critical medical deficiencies. (KT)
