A new generation of aluminum alloys is being developed with properties superior to current alloys. In order to assess which alloys are of primary interest for a given application, a multi-attribute utility analysis (MAUA) was performed over the range of properties expected. Three decision makers were surveyed to quantify their preferences toward various alloy characteristics. This work is a preliminary assessment to MAUA as a decision aid in the selection of materials for use in new Army vehicles. This technique can effectively assess the relative desirability of materials with different characteristics, however certain anomalies must be accounted for. The present work examined the generic desirability of certain anomalies must be accounted for. The present work examined the generic desirability of certain alloy properties to provide a fundamental understanding of the basic method to others who may be able to apply this decision analysis tool to their own specific applications.
