These studies of the photophysical properties of electronically excited N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl- p-phenylene-diamine (TMPD) were undertaken in order to determine whether exciplex-based vapor liquid visualization systems, which have been developed to provide fluorescent visualization of the separate vapor and liquid phases in an evaporating fuel spray, can be used in a combustion, i.e., oxygen-containing, environment. Exciplex-based fluorescence visualization systems are two-component dopant systems consisting of a fluorescent organic molecule, M, and a ground state exciplex-forming reaction partner, G, which are added to the fuel, which is modeled by normal alkanes.
