The mechanical behavior and properties of consolidated power metallurgical (PM) materials are largely controlled by the characteristics of the individual particulates (i.e., solidification rate, segregation, and oxide content prior to consolidation). Gas atomization techniques are used to produce the majority of the metal powders available. However, the fundamental momentum and solidification processes associated with the technique are not well understood. The current paper focuses upon a new technique, phase Doppler interferometry to characterize the performance of such atomizers. The technique is described in relation to diffraction based sizing approaches, and advantages and limitations of each approach are delineated. Phase Doppler is applied in the study of a gas atomizer operated using water to demonstrate the use of the information provided, namely: local drop size distributions and velocities. The data are analyzed to deduce the influence of air flow rates on the performance of the atomizer, and to provide more understanding of the relationship between atomizer operation and the resulting product.
