Open-Ended Coaxial Line: A Rigorous Variational Treatment

This paper presents a rigorous theoretical analysis of the open-ended coaxial line with an infinite ground plane or flange radiating into a semi-infinite lossy medium. This configuration has become popular for measuring the complex permittivity of liquids and bio-medical specimens, because it does not require a sample of a special shape. However, the theoretical analysis has previously only been performed by approximate methods; the best of these seems to be the point-matching technique. The present treatment employs the variational methods and has been applied to the behaviour of enclosed coaxial-line discontinuities. Great Britain. (JHD)
