Data analytic tools for choosing transformations to increase linear association are applied to a basic problem of soil physics, the determination of the coefficient of soil-water diffusivity D(0). Data on Manawatu sandy loam illustrate the decisions the analyst must face and the quality of the estimates that the analyst can expect.
