Navigation in Unfamiliar Cities: A Review of the Literature and a Theoretical Framework (Navigeren in Onbekende Steden: Een Literatuurstudie en een Theoretisch Kader).

This report is based on a literature review in which an attempt is made to identify those concepts and specific studies within cognitive science, that have direct relevance to navigation in unfamiliar cities. In particular, issues are discussed related to the strategies and representations used by drivers who have to find their way in unfamiliar cities. The interaction between the way spatial knowledge is represented and the search strategy used, is emphasized. A normative task analysis is proposed. The main goal of the report is to generate predictions to be tested in a subsequent field experiment. Netherlands, Reprints. (sdw)
