摘要

This workshop on Smart Materials, Structures, and Mathematical Issues is one of a series of workshops organized by the U.S. Army Research Office to identify recent significant developments and breakthroughs in science and technology. Its main objective is to evolve a consensus on the definition and characteristics of a 'smart'/'intelligent' material or structure, and discuss mechanisms and possible methods to produce them. Another objective is to identify directions of future research in this field. This report includes the abstracts/papers presented at the three sessions. The three sessions related to (1) Smart Structures, (2) Smart Materials, and (3) Related Mathematical Issues, contain a wide range of presentations concerning numerous technologies for actuators, sensors, intelligence, control, constitutive modeling, and other scientific fields that have become essential to the emerging science and technologies of smart materials and structures. At the end of each session a discussion period was held to address some of issues of general concern related to the mission of the workshop. (kr)
