摘要

Caged Mosquitoes, either from natural populations or laboratory colonies are used routinely for field bioassays to determine the minimum effective dose of new insecticides and to monitor pesticide application effectiveness. Over the years, the materials and the methods used to conduct these field bioassays have varied considerably, producing results that are not always comparable from one study to another. The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of sentinel mosquito transfer. This was done by comparing mosquito mortality caused by deposition of insecticide droplets on the cages with mortality caused by direct exposure to the insecticide aerosol cloud. The mortality of the female Aedes aegypti exposed to an ultralow volume (ULV) aerosol for 15 min and the transferred to clean cages was compared to the mortality of females exposed to the contaminated sentinel exposure cages. Data show that sentinel mosquitoes used in insecticide bioassays should be transferred into clean holding containers as soon as possible after exposure to prevent biasing of results from insect contact with insecticide deposited on cage walls and screens.
