Preliminary Screening of Halophilic Bacteria for G-Agent Degrading Enzyme Activity

A number of halotolerant/halophilic bacteria were isolated from salt springs in Utah. Upon testing, seven isolates were shown to possess high levels of enzymatic activity against the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor diisopropylfluorophosphate (DPF). Preliminary results indicate the possibility of two different enzyme classes: alkaline-preferring enzymes and enzymes with optimum activity in the neutral region.
