Magnetic Sphere Rheometer

A magnetic sphere rheometer which is fully controlled by a personal computer has been developed. It is capable of measuring viscosities in the range of 1000 to 5000 Pa (100-5 X 10 to the 7th power cP). It can operate at shear rates between .0001 and .0002/s and measure relaxation times down to 100 ms. The precision of the determined viscosities is in the order of 0.3%. The present rheometer is an improvement compared to existing magnetic sphere rheometers both concerning the precision and the viscosity range of the measurements. Measurements on viscosity standards, as well as on semidilute solutions of poly (isobutylmethacrylate-t-butylaminoethylmethacrylate) POLY(IMBA-tBAEMA) in dimethylacetamide (DMAA) and tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) were performed.
