Assessing the Capabilities of Training Simulations: A Method and SimulationNetworking (SIMNET) Application

A rule-based method was developed for assessing Army Training and EvaluationProgram Mission Training Plan (ARTEP METP) standards that can be met and subtasks and tasks that can be performed in training devices and simulations. The method was applied to assess the performance capabilities of the Simulation Networking (SIMNET) system. Extensions of the method were examined for identifying enhancements and performance measures needed for training simulations. Results indicated that the method provides an efficient means to assess the capabilities and requirements of devices and simulations. It can be used to identify key tasks for training effectiveness and transfer research, and to assess the effects of system enhancements in terms of the additional tasks that can be trained.
