We are in the midst of a revolution in the application of sensitive and rapidmethods of chemical and biological analysis. This is happening to a large degree to advances in electronics, computers, lasers and molecular biology which are allowing the practical application of totally new methods, and older methods previously understood in theory but considered too difficult for routine use. In some cases, there is still little immediate promise for applying sophisticated new chemical and physical techniques to the detection and identification of microorganisms because of a lack of knowledge regarding molecular composition. However, in recent years the components of bacteria have been especially well documented. Now, the time is right for the development of rapid methods for the detection of bacteria based upon physical as well as chemical properties. This is especially true since today molecular information can be used effectively to establish relationships at all levels of the taxonomic hierarchy. (jes)
