Comparison of AVHRR and ERBE Outgoing Longwave Radiation Estimates

Outgoing longwave radiation has been produced by NOAA from narrow spectralinterval observation beginning in June, 1974 (Gruber and Krueger, 1984). This data set has been and continues to be used in a variety of climate studies. However, it has only been since the ERBE, Barkstrom et al., 1988 that we have been able to obtain coincident and simultaneous comparisons between the NOAA estimates of OLR and broadband flux estimates as produced by ERBE. Such comparisons are important since it allows for an assessment of the accuracy of the OLR data which in turn impacts its use and plans for continued production of the data. This study presents the results of an extensive comparison of coincident and collocated ERBE and NOAA OLR data sets. From here on we will designate the NOAA estimates of OLR as AVHRR and ERBE estimates as ERBE. Keyword: Reprints. (r.h.)
